Blog #3: How Employers Can Help Reduce Stress

SHRM. (22AD, April 26). How can employers help to reduce stress in the workplace?https://www.shrm.org/resourcesandtools/tools-and-samples/hr-qa/pages/reducing-stress-in-the-workplace.aspx

Although workplace stress can be managed on your own by many different actions, it takes your employer's help as well. Employees who are experiencing high levels of stress tend to be more fatigued, less attentive, and overall, less productive. These behaviours directly impact the workplace, so employers should take action when trying to reduce their employee's stress levels as much as possible. Employee retention is a necessary factor for the business's success so managers must attend to all employee’s well-being. This article explains a few different actions that employers can take to reduce the stress their employees may feel at work.

Employees can offer flexible work hours to reduce stress as it reduces the risk of burnout. Employees who don’t have a say in their work tend to be less satisfied and motivated to complete their assigned tasks. This article also touches on the importance of employers allowing telecommuting. Allowing employees to work remotely or work from home part-time can reduce stress as they can free up more personal time to work on themselves. Another action employers should take is to encourage their employees to take care of their health. Whether that’s offering counselling, or making it easy to obtain health services, these are all things that contribute to reduced stress levels. Employers may also support the use of paid time off to ensure their employees take time away from the workplace to recharge. Other measures employers can take to assist their employees are providing resources and support, as well as asking their employees what they need.

As an employer, you want to keep your employees, so valuing them and their needs is important as it benefits your business. Taking the above measures are small actions that don’t require much work, but they make for an overall healthy and productive workplace and your employees will appreciate you for it.

This article reminds me of when my sister was working at her job at a liquor commission, the managers there were very accommodating to her mental and physical health needs. They would always express the importance of taking off the time she needed and returning when she was fully healed and able to perform to her highest extent. She was very appreciative to have supporting managers if they hadn’t let her take off the time she needed, her mental and physical health may have gotten worse to the point she was unable to work at all. They listened and allowed her to express how she was feeling and what she thought would be the best for her at that time. They were very supportive and ensured she took the right amount of time off so she could recharge and return to work when she was ready. I’ve had experiences within workplaces where they don’t value your needs and prioritize your health and it is very mentally and physically draining. Having a workplace that supports you not only at work, but your personal life as well is key when reducing stress within the workplace and within your daily life and for that, I’m thankful she and I have been lucky enough to have support at our workplaces.
