Acas Working for Everyone. (2023, April 23). Supporting employees - managing work-related stress. Acas. https://www.acas.org.uk/managing-work-related-stress/supporting-employees-with-work-related-stress

This article talks about how it’s important for managers to be supportive and considerate when talking to their employees about work-related stress. As it can be a sensitive topic for many people, knowing the appropriate ways when approach the situation is crucial. As a manager or an employee in a leadership position, you should know exactly what to do if a situation comes up where you must deal with stress within the workplace.

There are a few important steps this article highlights employers should take when they become aware an employee is experiencing stress. The first step is that they should arrange a time that works with the employee’s schedule to meet privately. When they meet, the manager should be open-minded, listen to what they are being told, try to identify the stressor and work with the employee to form possible solutions to the root cause. If they are unable to identify the cause themselves and create a plan moving forward it’s important to inform them of other internal or external specialists if they are in need.

As an employer, you should make sure the employee feels comfortable and safe when expressing their feelings by ensuring their confidentiality. In some cases, you may have to get another professional involved, but they should be made aware of that. An employer should prioritize their employee’s mental health as it benefits the workplace so doing regular checkups on the employees can ensure you are made aware of any problems that may be arising. This article also expresses the importance of ensuring your employees take proper leaves or make adjustments at work to guarantee they are healthy and not experiencing high levels of work-related stress. Although the employer should do anything in their control to reduce/prevent workplace stress, they may not be made aware of the situation until the employee is severely struggling, so knowing the proper solutions such as leaves of absence or providing counselling resources is an expectation.

I can really relate to this article because some of my family members pushed themselves too hard, and it really affected them. One of them worked so much that it started to mess up their everyday life. They had to stop working for a few months to get better. Seeing this happen showed me how important it is to not overdo it. Balancing work and health is crucial, and pushing ourselves too much can lead to serious problems. This experience taught me that taking care of ourselves is vital, even if it means slowing down a bit at work. Another one of my family members has had to take time off work as her health condition could have worsened if she had chosen to continue working. As her work environment is very fast-paced and highly stressful her physical health had to be put first as it could have resulted way worse had she kept working and tried to push through the pain. In both these situations they were very blessed to have accommodating and understanding employers with whom they felt safe expressing their situations and concerns so they could get better physically. Physical health is extremely important to be able to perform to your highest extent at work so taking the time you need to be able to return 100% is essential.
